UMEL was run by Mike Borrow and business partner Mike Humphrey. Founded in 1959, originally in Essex,
it moved to a small industrial unit in Farnborough and later to a larger unit in Bordon, Hants. A specialist
in subsea equipment, the company was probably best known for the creation of the JIM suit.
DHB
Construction Ltd was formed in 1969 by Dr David Dennison, David Hibbert and Mike Borrow to enable UMEL
to receive the finance it needed to develop JIM.
We worked quite closely with UMEL and DHBC Ltd in the
1980s, using their tanks for the testing of Jet JIM or Flying JIM as I ended up (mistakenly)
telling the press. UMEL was finally taken over by Slingsby Engineering Ltd in 1985.
